Common Faults and Troubleshooting Methods of Cartridge Heaters

Cartridge heaters may have various faults during long-term use, affecting the normal operation of production equipment. Mastering common faults and troubleshooting methods can quickly solve problems, reduce downtime and improve production efficiency.

Fault 1: The heater does not heat up. This is the most common fault, first check whether the power supply is normal, whether the switch is turned on, and whether the fuse is blown. Then check whether the lead wire is loose, broken or in poor contact, tighten the terminal or replace the lead wire. If the power supply and circuit are normal, it may be that the internal resistance wire is broken, and the heater needs to be replaced.

Fault 2: Poor heating efficiency, slow temperature rise. First check whether the heater surface and installation hole are covered with dust and oil stains, clean the attachments in time. Then check whether the fit clearance is too large, reapply thermal conductive paste or replace the heater with appropriate size. It may also be that the power configuration is too low, and a heater with matching power needs to be replaced according to the actual demand.

Fault 3: Local overheating of the heater, sheath deformation and discoloration. This is mostly caused by poor heat transfer, loose internal filling or overload operation. Check whether the installation is firm, whether the thermal conductive paste is evenly applied, avoid long-term over-power operation, and replace the heater with high-quality internal filling.

Fault 4: Electric leakage, electric shock feeling during operation. First cut off the power immediately, check whether the lead wire insulation layer is damaged, expose the wire core, replace the lead wire or wrap the insulation layer. It may also be that the heater internal insulation layer is damp or damaged, dry the heater or replace it with a new one. In humid environments, choose waterproof sealed heaters to avoid moisture ingress.

Fault 5: Short service life, frequent replacement. It may be that the heater material does not match the operating environment, such as using ordinary stainless steel in corrosive environments, replace it with corrosion-resistant materials. Improper installation, frequent vibration and over-temperature operation will also shorten the service life, standardize the installation method, avoid violent vibration, and install over-temperature protection devices.

When troubleshooting, be sure to cut off the power first to ensure safety. For faults that cannot be handled by themselves, contact professional maintenance personnel or heater manufacturers. Usually, do a good job in daily maintenance and standardized use, which can reduce the occurrence of faults and ensure the long-term stable operation of cartridge heaters.
