Common Reasons for Cartridge Heater Failures and a Guide to Maintenance
Heating element failure regularly causes industrial heating systems in manufacturing workshops to go down, resulting in unpredictable production delays and maintenance costs. Rather than problems with product quality, routine maintenance neglect and irregular use are the main causes of premature damage to precision heating components. Targeted maintenance can effectively extend the service life of a cartridge heater, which has established failure rules in long-term operation as a high-frequency used industrial heating component.
Insulation failure is the most frequent problem with a cartridge heater that is used frequently. The magnesium oxide insulation layer inside a cartridge heater is extremely hygroscopic. When the cartridge heater is used for a long time in a humid, dusty, or corrosive environment, moisture and impurities will get within. Electric leakage or a short circuit will occur as a result of the decreased insulating resistance. When equipment is placed in open workshops without dustproof and moistureproof safeguards, especially in seasonal humid environments, the bulk of insulation damage problems in actual manufacturing occur.
Heating attenuation is another common problem with a cartridge heater after extended use. Long-term high-load operation and frequent temperature rise and fall cycles will cause the internal nickel-chromium heating coil to gradually age. This will reduce heating efficiency and lead to a slower temperature rise and insufficient maximum temperature. Large installation gaps will also cause the cartridge heater to run in a suspended heating condition for a considerable amount of time. In the absence of effective heat conduction, heat accumulates on the sheath surface, causing local overheating and accelerating component ageing.
Mechanical damage also affects a cartridge heater's ability to function normally. During equipment assembly and maintenance, extrusion, bending, and intense vibration will damage the cartridge heater's internal coil structure and insulating layer, which could result in abnormal heating or complete failure. Maintenance experience indicates that non-standard installation and disassembly techniques are the main source of mechanically damaged cartridge heater parts.
Regular daily maintenance can effectively prevent most cartridge heater issues. Regular power-off inspection of surface dust and debris ensures smooth heat dissipation of the sheath. Regular insulation resistance testing detects moisture and ageing problems early. Before reusing equipment that has been idle for a long time, power-on preheating and dehumidification treatment are required to recover the insulating effectiveness of the cartridge heater. Two crucial methods to extend the life of heating elements-long-term no-load heating and overload operation beyond rated power-are strictly prohibited.
Frequent maintenance and timely troubleshooting are critical to the stability of the heating system. For different use scenarios and working intensities, preventative measures and targeted maintenance cycles can be created. By providing matched cartridge heater products and special fault avoidance techniques for a variety of industrial equipment, professional after-sales and customisation services can reduce long-term operating and maintenance costs.
