Plastic mold heating is a key link in the plastic processing industry, and cartridge heaters are widely used in this field due to their small volume, high heating efficiency and easy installation. However, many enterprises often feel confused when choosing cartridge heaters for plastic molds-there are many types and specifications of cartridge heaters on the market, and it is difficult to determine which one is most suitable for their own production needs. In fact, choosing cartridge heaters for plastic mold heating is not complicated, as long as we grasp several key factors.​

First of all, it is necessary to clarify the heating requirements of the plastic mold. Different plastic materials have different requirements for mold temperature. For example, the mold temperature required for processing ABS plastic is 50-80℃, while the mold temperature required for processing PC plastic is 80-120℃. The power of the cartridge heater needs to be determined according to the mold volume, thermal conductivity and required heating time. According to experience, the power density of cartridge heaters used for plastic mold heating is generally 20-50 W/cm². If the power density is too high, it will easily cause local overheating of the mold and damage the plastic products; if the power density is too low, the heating speed will be too slow, affecting production efficiency.​

Secondly, the material of the cartridge heater needs to be selected according to the working environment of the mold. Most plastic molds work in a normal temperature and pressure environment, so cartridge heaters made of stainless steel 304 can meet the requirements. However, if the mold is used in a corrosive environment or needs to contact with corrosive materials, cartridge heaters made of stainless steel 316L should be selected, which has better corrosion resistance. In addition, the sheath thickness of the cartridge heater also needs to be considered. The thicker the sheath, the better the wear resistance and service life, but the heat transfer efficiency will be slightly reduced; the thinner the sheath, the faster the heat transfer, but the service life may be affected.​

In addition, the installation method of the cartridge heater is also an important factor affecting the heating effect. Cartridge heaters for plastic mold heating are usually installed in the mold hole, and the fit between the heater and the mold hole should be tight. Generally speaking, the interference fit between the cartridge heater and the mold hole is 0.02-0.05 mm. This can ensure that the heat generated by the heater is quickly transferred to the mold, avoiding heat loss. At the same time, the installation depth of the heater should also be reasonable. It is generally recommended that the heater extend to 80-90% of the mold hole depth to ensure uniform heating of the mold.​

Finally, it should be noted that the quality of the cartridge heater is crucial. Poor quality cartridge heaters are prone to problems such as leakage, burnout and short service life, which not only affect production progress, but also may cause safety hazards. Therefore, when choosing cartridge heaters, it is necessary to select products from regular manufacturers with complete quality certification. To sum up, choosing cartridge heaters for plastic mold heating needs to comprehensively consider heating requirements, working environment, installation method and product quality. Different plastic mold types and processing requirements require professional scheme design to ensure the stability and efficiency of mold heating.
