How to Judge the Quality of Cartridge Heaters: Core Detection Indicators

Faced with cartridge heaters of different qualities on the market, many industrial purchasers lack clear judgment criteria and often only choose based on price, resulting in frequent problems such as short service life, poor heating efficiency and frequent failures of the purchased heaters. Based on industry expert experience, judging the quality of cartridge heaters needs to start from multiple core detection indicators, combining appearance inspection, performance testing and durability verification, to select truly reliable products.

The first core indicator is the appearance and craftsmanship of the heater. High-quality cartridge heaters have a smooth and flat outer sheath surface, no scratches, bumps, rust spots or welding defects. The welding part of the sheath is firm and full, without virtual welding or air holes, which ensures the sealing and mechanical strength of the heater. The end sealing is neat and tight, with no cracks or gaps in the sealing material, which can effectively prevent external moisture and impurities from entering the interior. In contrast, low-quality heaters have rough surface processing, loose welding, and poor sealing, which are prone to damage after short-term use.

Dimensional accuracy is the second key detection indicator. The diameter, length, heating section size and wiring end size of the cartridge heater must strictly comply with the standard or customized specifications. Using precision measuring tools to detect dimensional tolerances, the diameter error of high-quality heaters is controlled within ±0.02mm, and the length error is within ±0.5mm. Accurate dimensions ensure a perfect fit with the equipment mounting hole, realizing efficient heat conduction. Heaters with excessive dimensional errors will cause poor heat transfer or difficult installation, directly affecting heating effect and service life.

Insulation performance is a core safety and quality indicator, which must be detected strictly. Use a megohmmeter to measure the insulation resistance between the heater resistance wire and the outer sheath. Under normal temperature and dry conditions, the insulation resistance of high-quality cartridge heaters is not less than 500MΩ. Good insulation performance prevents current leakage, ensures safe use, and avoids short circuit burnout caused by insulation failure. If the insulation resistance is too low, it means that the internal insulation material is of poor quality or has moisture, and such heaters are prone to safety hazards during use.

Heating performance testing is the most critical link to judge the quality. Connect the heater to a power supply for a continuous power-on test, detect the surface temperature rise speed and temperature uniformity. High-quality cartridge heaters heat up quickly, can reach the set temperature within a specified time, and the surface temperature difference is small, without local overheating. Use a temperature detector to test the surface temperature of each section, and the temperature uniformity of high-quality heaters is controlled within ±3℃. In addition, test the power deviation, the actual power of high-quality heaters is within ±5% of the rated power, ensuring stable heating efficiency.

The high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance of the material are important indicators for judging long-term durability. Put the cartridge heater in a high-temperature environment equivalent to the actual working condition for a continuous aging test. High-quality heaters made of high-grade sheath materials and resistance wires have no obvious oxidation, deformation or performance attenuation after long-term high-temperature operation. Low-quality heaters will appear sheath oxidation, resistance wire deformation and resistance attenuation after short-term high-temperature use, resulting in reduced heating efficiency or even burnout.

The internal filling process is also a hidden quality indicator that is not easy to observe directly. High-quality cartridge heaters adopt high-density compacted magnesium oxide powder filling, which eliminates internal air gaps, ensures close contact between the resistance wire, insulation material and the sheath, and realizes rapid and uniform heat conduction. Poor internal filling will lead to uneven heat conduction, local overheating of the resistance wire, and greatly shortened service life. This can be indirectly judged by testing the temperature uniformity and heat transfer efficiency of the heater.

In addition, the wiring end structure and lead wire quality also reflect the overall quality of the heater. High-quality heaters have firm wiring terminals, not easy to fall off, and lead wires with high temperature resistance, good insulation and strong tensile resistance. The wiring part is treated with high-temperature insulation, which can adapt to the high-temperature working environment and avoid short circuits caused by melting of the lead wire insulation layer.

When purchasing cartridge heaters, in addition to checking the above indicators, it is also necessary to verify the manufacturer's production qualifications and quality certification. Formal manufacturers have complete production technology and quality inspection systems, and each product will undergo strict performance testing before leaving the factory. Don't blindly pursue low prices, but comprehensively measure based on quality indicators, and select heaters with stable performance, safety and durability, which can reduce the frequency of replacement and maintenance costs in the long run.
