The trapped water transforms to steam when the sealed device eventually achieves working temperature, creating internal pressure that may cause the sheath to inflate or produce conductive pathways. The decreased dielectric strength permits leakage currents that produce more internal heat even if the sheath is still intact. Localised hot spots under load can result from mechanical stresses during transportation that cause the resistance coil to shift or the compacted insulation to develop micro-voids. After handling lubricants or packaging goods, surface contamination may carbonise and create insulating coatings.
A dry environment with a constant temperature and vibration protection is necessary for proper storage. Before being installed, units should be kept in their original packing. Heaters that are kept in storage for a long time benefit from a regulated low-power bake-out prior to full energisation. Upon receipt, visual inspection of the sheath and leads reveals shipping damage that may subsequently result in unequal heat transmission. Before installation, insulation-resistance testing verifies that the dielectric qualities have not been harmed by moisture.
For equipment intended for humid regions or facilities with lengthy inventory cycles, these preliminary measures are particularly crucial. If the cartridge heater is already compromised, packaging lines, plastic moulds, and lab equipment are all at risk. The degree of pre-installation degradation varies depending on handling techniques, storage times, and ambient humidity levels. In order to prevent the progressive overheating that starts long before the first manufacturing cycle, supply-chain conditions and arriving inspection procedures are evaluated to guarantee that each cartridge heater starts service with intact insulation and undamaged internal geometry.
