The Difference Between 35mm Large Diameter Cartridge Heater and Small-Diameter Cartridge Heater

In industrial heating applications, cartridge heater is one of the most commonly used heating elements, and it is divided into various specifications according to diameter, among which 35mm large diameter cartridge heater and small-diameter cartridge heater (usually 6mm-25mm) are the two most widely used types. Many manufacturers often confuse these two types of cartridge heater, leading to improper selection and affecting production efficiency. In fact, there are significant differences between 35mm large diameter cartridge heater and small-diameter cartridge heater in terms of structure, performance, and application scenarios, and understanding these differences is crucial for selecting the right heating element.

First, the most obvious difference is the diameter, which directly affects the internal structure and power output of the cartridge heater. The 35mm large diameter cartridge heater has a larger outer diameter, which allows it to accommodate more heating coils and high-purity magnesium oxide insulation powder. Compared with small-diameter cartridge heater, the 35mm cartridge heater can achieve higher power output-usually, the power of a single 35mm cartridge heater can reach 500W-5000W, while the power of small-diameter cartridge heater is mostly between 50W-1000W. This means that the 35mm large diameter cartridge heater is more suitable for scenarios that require large heat load, while small-diameter cartridge heater is more suitable for local precision heating with small heat demand.

In terms of heat transfer performance, the two types of cartridge heater also have obvious differences. The 35mm large diameter cartridge heater has a larger contact area with the heated object, which can transfer heat more quickly and uniformly. This is particularly important in large mold heating, high-capacity liquid heating, and other scenarios where uniform temperature distribution is required. On the contrary, the small-diameter cartridge heater has a small contact area, and the heat is concentrated in a small range, which is suitable for local heating of small parts, such as precision molds, small electronic components, and medical equipment.

The difference in application scenarios is another key point. As mentioned earlier, the 35mm large diameter cartridge heater is mainly used in heavy-duty industrial scenarios, such as large injection molding machines, die casting molds, high-capacity liquid tanks, and heavy machinery preheating. These scenarios require large-area, high-power heating, and the 35mm cartridge heater can meet the demand for stable and efficient heating. Small-diameter cartridge heater, on the other hand, is widely used in light industry, electronics, medical treatment, and other fields. For example, it is used to heat small plastic molds, warm electronic components, and sterilize medical instruments-scenarios that require precise control of local temperature and small heat load.

There are also differences in installation and maintenance requirements. The 35mm large diameter cartridge heater requires a larger mounting hole, and the tolerance of the hole diameter is more strict-usually, the hole diameter should be 0.02mm-0.05mm larger than the heater's diameter to ensure tight contact and avoid damage during thermal expansion. In addition, due to its higher power, the 35mm cartridge heater requires more attention to voltage matching and heat dissipation during installation. Small-diameter cartridge heater has lower requirements for mounting hole precision, and its installation is more flexible, which can be embedded in small spaces that are difficult to reach by large-diameter heaters. In terms of maintenance, the 35mm cartridge heater needs more frequent inspection of the sheath and lead wires due to its high power and heavy load, while small-diameter cartridge heater has simpler maintenance requirements.

It's also worth noting the difference in service life under the same working conditions. The 35mm large diameter cartridge heater uses more insulation materials and thicker sheath, which has better heat resistance and wear resistance. Under proper use and maintenance, its service life can reach 2-3 years. However, if it is used improperly (such as dry firing or excessive power), its service life will be significantly shortened. Small-diameter cartridge heater has a smaller volume and less insulation material, so its service life is usually 1-2 years, but it is more sensitive to overheating and voltage instability.

In summary, the 35mm large diameter cartridge heater and small-diameter cartridge heater are not just different in size, but also have significant differences in power, heat transfer performance, application scenarios, and installation and maintenance requirements. Choosing the right type of cartridge heater according to the actual heating demand and scenario is the key to ensuring heating efficiency and reducing production costs. For scenarios with large heat load and uniform heating requirements, the 35mm large diameter cartridge heater is the better choice; for local precision heating with small heat demand, small-diameter cartridge heater is more suitable. In complex industrial scenarios, professional technical guidance is often needed to select the most appropriate cartridge heater specifications.
